The Canal is only one chapter in Panama's oldest story.
Panama has been shaped by movement for more than five centuries.
Panamá Viejo was founded on the Pacific coast in 1519. In 1671 the city was attacked and left in ruins. Two years later Panama City was rebuilt eight kilometres west, and that second site is Casco Viejo.
Cobblestone streets, cathedral towers and rooftop terraces. Across the bay, a modern skyline reflected in the Pacific.
Then, in 1914, the Canal opened a new passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Today both stories sit inside the same city.
